Recreational vehicles (RVs) come in all shapes and sizes, and your insurance options should, too. RV insurance is required for motorized (drivable) RVs, and while it may not be required for towable RVs, it’s still a smart option.

Whether you have a full-time motorhome or a seasonal camper, request an insurance quote today to receive a policy that is just as unique as your RV.

What does RV Insurance Cover?

RV Insurance can protect your drivable or towable RV from collision, fire, theft, liability coverage, and more.

Towable RVs

Towable RVs, also known as travel trailers or tow-behind campers, are recreational vehicles designed to be towed by a separate vehicle, typically a car, SUV, pickup truck, or sometimes a larger truck or specialized towing vehicle.

Some of the most common types of towable RVs include:

  • Fifth wheel trailers
  • Travel trailers
  • Pop-up campers
  • Cargo and horse trailers
  • Teardrop campers
  • Toy haulers

Drivable RVs

A drivable RV, or “motorhome,” combines the living quarters and the vehicle’s driving functions into a single unit. Unlike towable RVs, drivable RVs are self-contained and self-propelled, allowing you to drive and live in the same vehicle.

Drivable RVs include:

  • Class A Motorhomes: Resemble bus-like structures and offer ample living space, including full-sized bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchens.
  • Class B Motorhomes: Class B motorhomes typically provide basic amenities like sleeping areas, small kitchens, and sometimes a compact bathroom.
  • Class C Motorhomes: Class C motorhomes offer a good balance of comfort and maneuverability, with amenities similar to those in Class A but typically on a smaller scale.

Types of RV Insurance Coverage

Liability Coverage

Liability coverage provides financial protection if you are found responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property.

Scenario: While backing your fifth wheel trailer out of your driveway, you accidentally hit a parked vehicle. The truck’s bumper is dented. Your liability coverage pays for the damages to your neighbor’s car.

Collision Coverage

It’s no secret that RVs are expensive! Having collision coverage will help pay for repairs or replacement of the RV if it becomes damaged if an accident does occur.

Scenario: While driving through a narrow road, you swerve into the guardrail, damaging the side of your RV. Fortunately, your collision coverage addresses the cost of repairs to your RV.

Comprehensive Coverage

Collisions are not the only accidents or unforeseen events that can cause damage or loss. Comprehensive coverage will pay for repairs or replacement if your RV is damaged or lost due to a natural disaster, fire, theft, or vandalism.

Scenario: You park overnight at a campground and wake up to find that someone has vandalized the exterior of your RV. Thankfully, your comprehensive coverage covers the cost of restoring the aesthetics of your damaged vehicle.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM)

We can’t always assume that the other motorist is sufficiently insured. As such, UIM provides support when the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.

Scenario: While stopped at a stoplight, a semi rear ends your motorhome causing you to have a medical injury. After pulling over and speaking to the at-fault driver, you discover they do not have insurance. Your UIM coverage ensures that medical injuries to you are covered.

RV Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

How much does RV insurance cost?

RV insurance costs can vary depending on the value of your vehicle and your location in the country, among other factors.

Speaking to a qualified agent is the best way to get an accurate policy cost estimate.

Is RV insurance required?

By law, all drivable RVs or motorhomes must be insured with minimum liability coverage. Some states also require drivable RVs to carry UIM insurance.

However, most states don’t require insurance for towable RVs since auto insurance typically extends to the towable vehicle.

If you purchased your drivable or towable RV with a loan, your lender likely requires some form of insurance as a condition of financing.
